Daddy is SO mean!
It's all about grass stains and flutterbyes
I read on a daily basis another very lovely blogger named Jill. She has rabies. Baby rabies. (it’s not a real disease)…She recently wrote this about giving something to her son’s teacher for teacher appreciation week. While I’m 100% behind teachers, and I could certainly never do their jobs, do they really need a whole week? Secretaries get a day, so do bosses–as if bosses really need a day, right? But a whole week (at the end of the school year, no less) does seem a bit odd, as the ‘other Jill’ postulates. I mean, a lot of parents DO give ‘end of the year’ gifts to the teachers. You know, I know my kid was a hellion, so here’s a bouquet to brighten up your desk! or something like that. Most schools are letting out in the next few weeks anyway, so parents are really ‘paying’ the price for their kid’s education so to speak.
This is when I get out my ‘old grump’ card. Back when I went to school, you said thank you to your teachers, or you said goodbye and looked a little teary, or you just ran around like crazy because that’s what kids do when it’s hot and they’re stuck in a musty old school building…
So here’s my question: are we overdoing it? I mean, sending something every day for a week? Can you imagine? If you read Jill’s blog, she spent $12. I saw another mom on facebook, she clearly spent a lot of time crafting paper flowers and put them in a watering can with a note about ‘growing’ the kid’s education. Time and money wise, that ain’t cheap! Add in the fact that you have to do that 5x (and a lot of kids have more than one teacher, too) plus end of year gifts and it adds up pretty quickly. Not to mention a lot of parents give Christmas gifts to the teachers, too, I’m not sure if anyone ever takes an apple at the beginning of school anymore, but it’s a far cry from an apple to a week-long deluge of gifts. Now multiply that by 20-30 depending on the classroom…. can a teacher really ‘take in’ that many trinkets and such without overloading their house?
What do you think? Are we as a culture overdoing it? Is there too much emphasis on ‘stuff’ when a simple thank you, a card, a picture your kid colored, or say, volunteering at a function would give the same impression of gratitude?
Go ahead: talk about it…
Fun Monday itself has died a slow and painful death, so my goal is going to be showing you something fun on Mondays! Or telling you if I don’t have a picture to show! Below is my first lily to open. There are dozens and dozens of buds even on this one plant! I’ll try and get another pic when it’s not raining, AND when there are more open. My mom simply had too many plants, so she gave some to me! Woohoo! Now they’ve been back there I think it’s the second year, but anyway…there are 5 of these gorgeous things, and we bought a small pack of bright orange lilies of a different type (more like tiger lilies than day lilies), and there are 4 of them, so they are kind of interspersed between the yellow…and those we planted on top of the hill 2 years ago. Last year we transplanted them with these others, and they bloomed, but were stunted a little bit. Now, they are all four back! And… all are budding. It will be an explosion of color! Yeah! So today, my fun is ‘nearly free’ flowers! I think the name of them in Latin is roughly ‘of gold’..you can see why. Beautiful! If you want to play along, just post on your blog and let me know in the comments. Everyone else, check the comments! This is not an attempt to resurrect Fun Monday, but if you were looking for something to post about today, this is your impetus!

Somehow, even in the vast internet world, I hang onto the fringes. Only a few people read, and even fewer comment. I feel like in the last couple of years, my circle has gotten even smaller. Fewer friends, less interaction, and so called ‘peers’ seem to have all but disappeared. Everyone reads the ‘top 10′ blogs and forgets schmoes like me. So if you’re reading, even if you don’t normally comment, go ahead and do it today. Let me know you’re reading. Let me know what you’re interested in. I’ve seen several bloggers make this call, a few people comment and then they have a mass of happy readers that share and share until they have a really good base to draw from. Like being popular, right? I was never much for being popular, but being noticed is definitely appreciated. So speak up. What do you like. Does anything bore you? Is there anything I used to write about that you miss? Anything you’d like to see? This is my microphone, giving a shout out to the folks who like country living, cute kids, and sarcasm…
Well, we had 2 days of banana, and then slept through 2 days of dinners. So last night we gave her sweet potato! She had a lot more success getting that to her mouth, and even though there was some requisite gagging, she did manage to get a couple of small chunks down (don’t ask me how I know). It definitely went over better than the banana, same as big sister. The good news is that a sweet potato is quite large so she can have that for several meals, and the rest of us can eat the rest when she’s ready for something else!
oh and now she’s eating paper? sheesh.
This morning Brennan was baptized in our church. Here’s a few pics of her in her fancy dress.
Keeley was baptized on Easter, and Brennan on Earth Day.
We had her Godmother and a lot of family members there in church. We provided a meal for everyone afterward at the house. She slept through most of it!
