Sci Girls Episode 304: Butterfly Diaries
Don’t discount offerings like PBS shows such as Wild Kratts, Sesame Street, Sid the Science Kid, etc. While no one is advocating for kids to be zombies, you’d be amazed at what they pick up from an educational program or two.
Books
“My oh my oh butterfly” and “On beyond bugs: All about Insects” from the Cat in the Hat learning library are top younger grade book picks for the basics on anatomy and getting to know all about those creatures under the class, insect. These are some of my favorite series, because they rhyme AND have colorful pictures while staying true to the information–with a little help from Thing 1 and Thing 2. Other fantastic ones are the scientific and chapter books from the Magic School Bus if you have slightly older kids, as well. They’re fast reads and make the world of bugs a little less scary. I like for the kids to have a variety of fiction and non-fiction books to allow for a rounded study of each subject. Even if all they do is skim the photos in the non-fiction books, they’re still gleaning a lot from each one. Want to know our picks for K-3rd grade? Check out the rest of our reads in our Goodreads lists here!
Miscellaneous
We got things like puppets, art kits, and etc. from our local library. Don’t discount the free-to-you offerings you might find there! Go talk to your local librarian and ask if they have kits you can check out. Often you could find everything you would need, including books, videos, games, and worksheets that you can copy in ONE place! We even found a stuff tantantula puppet! This lets the younger kids in on a bit of the fun! Go ahead, read a book in a cricket’s voice. Your kids won’t be disappointed!
