Is it too soon for Christmas? Every year items appear in stores a bit sooner. We went to the megamart the other day and the Halloween clearance (and fall for that matter) was already 75% off and squished into a tiny section. Christmas was already set. I did find a cool Snoopy Scarecrow that I fell in love with. Someone had severely ‘cheeto’d’ his paw, but we took him home anyway. I think the girls will love him as a decoration for many years to come. Also he was around $5–you can’t get most decorations for that, and as a bonus- no glitter! He will last from August to November as a special friend. He’s sitting on our windowsill right now!
But is it too soon for Christmas? I’ve seen a lot of people voicing concerns either way. Let the turkey have its’ day they say. Since the turkey gets eaten, I don’t think it really cares. I appreciate gathering with friends and family, my husband having 2 days off is nice, and you know, being thankful is super important. However, the shady information we all got growing up about early American settlements makes a little less ‘rah rah Pilgrims’ as the years go by. Instead I try and focus on my own thankfulness, and quite often that has to do with my faith. Which leads back to Christmas.
Last year we went ahead and decorated at least in part for the holiday WAY before Thanksgiving, after all, we had a bundle of joy on the way and I had not put out any of my usual fall decor. So the first weekend in November, we put up the tree, put on lights and let it shine. Ornaments didn’t happen until nearly Christmas day, but there was something charming just about the excitement and coziness of the lights– completely separate of the hustle, bustle, and music in stores. Especially with a baby snuggled in arms, it gave the kids something else to focus on and look forward to other than manhandling the baby!
Last year
It did not remove the joy from Thanksgiving. Click the heading above to see. We were ever so thankful to be home with a baby. Although honestly, since I ended up on my feet the entire morning just days after having a C section, I could have really used a healthy spouse. He was fine by the next day, but it was really wearing. Ha! I was really thankful for my meal that day! I’m sure we sat down in the living room afterward and watched the lights on the tree, and enjoyed every minute of it, music, and all. Too soon for Christmas? Nah.
