Examples:
A straw bends better at the ‘wrinkles’ — the same as your elbow or knuckles.
Can you catch it? A straw is too hard to catch when dropped from above but a yardstick gives you enough time to react (reflexes, reaction time, etc)
Fingerprints, examining fingerprints, how people are identified by their fingerprints, etc. using paper, pencil, and tape.
Fingerprints have ridges to help you grip things: tape your fingers to smooth out the ridges and try and pick up a dime. Then try WITH your fingerprints. Much easier!
Staring at a flag photo and then at the wall to see what the image does from your brain to the image.
How big is my heart? Size and location of heart.
How do I catch a cold? Coughing on a tissue to see how many germs might get caught from a distance versus up close.
Listening to heartbeat with a stethoscope (the toy ones really work!)
Exercise causes a heart to beat faster (listening!)
Using 2 books:
Human body experiments using fingerprints, hair, muscles, and more : one hour or less science experiments
and
Janice VanCleave’s play and find out about the human body : easy experiments for young children.
Wednesday:
SICK DAY
3 year old– Story time at the library with Valentine’s Day books
Thursday:
Reading together:
These were basically for the 3 year old, the 6 year old really liked the books included in our FUN! Thursday night sneaky lesson! I think there were at least 15! (link below)
Cinderella (Disney)
I know an old lady who swallowed a fly by Hoberman
Baby Daisy’s Good Idea by Disney
Blackberry Surprise by Disney
Cleo Cooperates by Bridwell
Clifford Plays Fair by Bridwell
If you Give a Pig a Party by Numeroff
Music:
My kids LOVE music. While I can sing and follow along with notes, they get really good instruction weekly with an underemployed (go figure) teacher that’s in our church. They’re part of a choir that sings a few times a quarter at church and visits the nursing home, etc. However, they get stuck on the same few songs [if I hear go tell it on the mountain again before Easter…] so I thought maybe if I introduced them to music as something to appreciate that has a lot of variety, they’d broaden their CONSTANT humming and singing playlists a little bit. Mostly the 3 year old was mad I wasn’t showing them a cartoon on the tablet, so she only listening to part of it, so the 6 year old and I had some good chatter during and after the songs.
Unforgettable by Cole
Unforgettable by Cole/Cole and showing the video having color added to it, how different the music sounded from one to the other.
What a Wonderful World by Armstrong- tried to identify different types of instruments by ear. Different sounds of voices.
Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone by Withers– she knew WHY this was a love song, but I think she’s so used to happy ones that it threw her.
Feeling Good by Nina Simone — my daughter asked if this was about slavery– I told her no, it was probably more about a relationship or being free in your mind.
Feeling Good by Buble- I didn’t let her see the video of this one, so she really had to listen, and she liked it better than the other, mostly for the instruments/mix.
Mona Lisa by Cole – great way to tie art and music together.
Mona Lisa lost her smile by D.A. Coe– these books reminded her of a Magic Treehouse book that she read, so we talked about that.
3 year old:
Alphabet worksheets for letters H and J from education.com
6 year old:
Writing worksheets for letter H (hot sight word) and J (sentence writing with jellyfish and drawing) from the Writing for All Seasons Kindergarten workbook from education.com
Various math and language worksheets with valentine’s theme from education.com K and 2nd grade packs [she chose even #s, odd #s, patterns, and simple +/- to do first]
I’m having a little bit of trouble getting things organized so that it all flows smoothly together, I think having books ahead of time so I can look at them helps, and I’ve got quite a few things in for the next topic in already. A lot of the human body books were just repeats of each other with variation in fun facts- if I had weeded them out a little bit we may have only taken 2 weeks to do the study. For the next unit I grabbed some chapter books for my 6 year old for independent reading that actually GO with the topic, so we’ll see how that goes as it moves along. I can see us working at this unit for quite some time, so I’ll need to be on top of it. Which brings us to the introduction to the next unit with a PIZZA PARTY! Open this link for a great way to introduce NUTRITION to your home schoolers!– includes book list, activities, etc.
