Last night was pizza and a movie night. The kids watched Lion King while we did all the chopping, mixing and raising of dough, etc. Then we watched Harry Potter #8, we had only seen it in theater and maybe one other time than that at home, although we’ve had the video as long as it’s been out. The kids were less impressed with that, so they played and then went to bed!
Today is Derby Day. Did you know I love horse racing? Well now you do. I’ve toured Churchill Downs and felt the power of the hooves echoing through time. It was awesome. We love watching coverage, and as I’m sitting here we’re seeing potential for 3 jockeys to make history: a woman may be the first of her sex to cross the finish line in first place, a black man may win for the first time in 111 years, and a veteran jockey, who turned 50 (and retired 7 years ago) is back in the saddle. Those are the just the PEOPLE to watch, the horses are a whole other story unto themselves. Each horse, owner, trainer, and jockey has a piece of the puzzle. Bloodlines matter. The condition of the track (it may be ‘sloppy’ or super wet), matters. Some horses run better on a fast (dry) track. There’s the potential for falls, for injuries (which I always pray not to happen), for lots of money to exchange hands, for a come from behind win, a sure thing, or a long shot. It’s the fastest 2 minutes in sports, and I look forward to it every year.
Tomorrow is Cinco De Mayo. Sure it’s a Mexican holiday, but doesn’t everyone love Mexican food and want an excuse to have a party? I personally am a restaurant salsa freak and love any excuse to go get my mouth wrapped around some warm chips and cool spicy ‘sauce’ as my kids like to say!
Our daughter’s club (which my husband also volunteers for), is having their end of year swim party Sunday as well. She is SO excited! Let’s see if those swim lessons come to anything!
While we will be doing everything pretty low-key, it will still be a fun-filled weekend, despite the incessant rain. What’s on your radar this weekend?
