Last summer we were given some bulbs that were past their prime from a retail establishment (they were going in the dumpster and someone we know rescued the lot of them). So we planted them, watered them, and then hoped.
… and we were pleasantly surprised that every single one of these suckers came up, purple and gold.
They form an egg shaped circle (courtesy of my hubby’s tractor blade) around my bird bath and rosebush. You can see them shining gold just on the edge of the picture there. Somehow, the freebies or cuttings we get from anyone else always do better than what we buy.
YESTERDAY, we spent a good solid 2 hours moving the pile of mulch from beside the playset to inside the circle, and digging out weeds between the bulbs, and then covering the spots all around the bulbs with mulch (made from our own trees!) and as much of the inner circle as we could. My plan is to take the zinnia seeds my mom gave us and plant them in the inner circle. Should make for a bright summer!
Since our ‘source’ rescued mums, too, our driveway entrance should be gorgeous this fall. I love freebies!
p.s. I can feel every single ab muscle…. and that may be a good thing, or a bad thing, but I can feel them. Ouch!

Love the color choice 🙂 I know you didn’t have a “choice” since they were given to you, but clearly meant to be!!
