Fun Monday: Jan 18, 2010

This week’s Fun Monday post will be about chores. What is your least favorite chore? Vacuum get you down? Dust bunnies saying, “oh yeah, you and what army?” Is there a chore that you neglect doing it until the absolute last minute when guests arrive? Do you just pray they won’t look ‘there’? Are you going green with your cleaning? Top tips? If  you have any ideas for anyone on Monday, post them in their comment box, because we all know that we LOVE comments!

This topic (which I hope you won’t hate, even if you don’t love it), was inspired by my hope to go through everything in my apartment before we move it to the new house. Closets that have boxes in them now? Yes, the boxes hopefully will be checked and things removed if we don’t want them! Junk drawer de-junked, clothes of EVERY season gone through and donated to charity, even kitchen stuff is getting a second look before it gets the ‘green light’ to go ‘HOME’ with us. This will serve as my post for Monday, too so keep reading and be sure to comment with helpful tips for me too!

My least favorite chore is ALL of them! Although I did realize I’d been staring at the same gravy spot for at least a month on the kitchen floor, so I guess maybe mopping wins? I vacuum up the chunks and ignore the splatter. Guess it’s a good thing that we’ll have brownish floors in our new place. Great for hiding messes I can’t take the time to clean up. To be fair, it is quite a hassle to mop the place, I have to make sure the baby is napping and will STAY asleep, I have to do the bathroom first, then the kitchen and then go back and take off the mopping strip from the swiffer and toss it and wash my hands in the bath. Any recommendations on making that easier would be a big help, I just have the ‘mop’ kind not the wetjet that squirts solution or anything. I’m considering changing to microfiber cloth instead of the swiffer. It would be washable and ‘green’. One REALLY COOL thing I did was finally call up a service organization in town and got rid of a tote full of baby shower gift bags, tissue paper, an unopened sample can of formula, diaper coupons, 2 sample diapers, and some free cup I got in a giveaway with a straw built in it. That would be a breeding ground at my house for green things! Anyway, I feel MUCH lighter with that gone, AND everyone loving me and my unborn baby and giving me gifts about 17 months ago was just the first step in the journey those bags would take. They will now be put to a better use, for women/children in need! Yeah!

So come on and play with us. Sign-up below! Special thanks to Pamela again for the use of Mister Linky. I’m putting it up ahead of time this time. Oh and feel free to scroll down and comment on my next post about decorating a nursery. I need help!

  1. Oooo…. this is right up my alley!!!! Yes, I am a freak. I LOVE cleaning! This is what I do when I’m home alone. In fact, it’s my favorite time to do it! I do have to agree with you on the mopping though. I will clean the kitchen, but I leave the mopping to my husband. HE loves to get down on his hands and knees and does the floor cleaning by hand. Sicko.

    I’ll be playing. I’m wondering how I want to approach it – as a how-to, or a description in general… Hmmmm….

  2. HI Jill! I signed up for this fun topic! I am not so much into cleaning as I am into organizing. This is the time of year that I like to clean out every closet, drawer and nook and cranny in the whole house!

  3. Hi Jill…I hear you on the cleaning kick. I try to keep things in order and I do suceed most of the time…Thankfully by hubby is neat also. The one thing I do hate to do is clean the shower…its so awkward to get into and clean it properly. I use the micro mops also…to wet mop my tile floors and pergo floors…I like it because I can rinse and reuse. I won’t be able to play FM this week…we will be away for the weekend and will also be unplugged from our computers. I am hosting the following Monday Jan 25, so stay tuned.

  4. I’ve been MIA for a few weeks, so I’m keen to get back into Fun Mondays, wow I had a bit of a time tracking down who was hosting the next one LOL but I’m in!!!

    Interesting topic!

  5. Not having managed to get the last few FM posts actually published (some are languishing in my drafts) I lost track of who was hosting. I was reading a plurk just now and someone mentioned you and sayre so I’m going to make more of an effort for next Monday.

  6. Mariposa

I’m not so into chores as most of my readers can tell! LOL I will be back here once mine is up!

  7. Hi Jill–sorry I won’t be able to do your Fun Monday topic this week. I’m working on this rather long and involved post and want to get it on the web and out of my mind. Couldn’t figure out how to bend the rules–as we FM people like to do–and fit it with your topic. 🙂 I do have a great interest in keeping my home organized and clutter free–without spending a lot of time on everything. I’ll check in with “the regulars” and see how they swing it!

  8. Hello, mine is up. After a vacation from Fun Monday, I am back at least for today.

You have excellent tips for people moving to a new home. Donate the uneeeded items ot charity. When we moved this summer, we were able to do some or that. Also, having a garage sale helped; however, even though, we moved in July, there are still unsorted boxes in the garage and some rooms.

Thanks for hosting this Fun Monday.

  9. Mopping? I don’t do any of that…isn’t that what the dog is for? My dog used to clean-up the spills, but now she’s gone and I’m glad my floor is speckled for camouflage. Someday someone’s actually going to mop it and I’ll find out it’s really a solid cream color.

  10. I’m using the cold winter months to go through every closet and drawer and clear out clutter that just makes everything more difficult to keep clean. My most hated chore is grocery shopping because don’t like to leave the house, even for errands.

A friend of mine swears by the Fly Lady website. the idea is that you set the timer for 15 minutes and attack a chore until the buzzer goes off then you can stop. It works for her.

  11. I have truly forgotten how I kept up with things when my 3 kids were small. I worked full time – and I remember feeling overwhelmed for sure. My husband was always on the team and did his share of cleaning up the place.

As for mopping – I always used a bucket and mopped by hands. That allowed for me to clean the corners and nooks and crannies.

  12. I rarely vacuum, just got myself a new vacuum cleaner so maybe I will vacuum more. I tried Fly Lady and gave up after week one, but I must say, my sink was shining clean for that one week. Interesting topic, I enjoyed it

  13. Just letting you know my post is now up. Reading some of the comments I’m glad I’m in good company as I see I’m not the only one not keen on domestic chores!!

  14. HI Jill and thanks so much for hosting Fun Monday! It is good that you are planning ahead with cleaning out and organizing before the move. It will make your life alot easier!

BTW, I have NOT tried all of the tips posted on my blog for the Magic Eraser, but I have tried 90 percent of them and yes the toilet one does work!
